Lower School
The Lower School Department at Severndale is for pupils from year 1 to year 4 (5 – 9 years of age). We aim to group children in order to best meet their educational needs in a happy, supportive and imaginative learning environment. Staffing levels enable teaching to take place either in individual, small group, or whole class situations depending upon individual needs and curriculum requirements.
We seek to build on work begun in the Early Years Foundation Stage, and to develop each child’s communication and interaction skills, personal, social and independence skills, and positive attitudes to learning, as well as accessing all subjects of the National Curriculum. The National Literacy and Numeracy strategies have been adapted to meet the needs of our children in order to ensure they are relevant and challenging. Curriculum areas are linked through a thematic approach with an emphasis on active and interactive teaching and learning and these plans are shared with parents to facilitate home and school working closely together.
Educational visits are arranged as appropriate to reinforce and extend work in the classroom supported by links with Wilfred Owen School. Most children also have access to riding for one term of each year and regular swimming using our hydro-therapy pool or the Quarry Pool in Shrewsbury. Specialist in-school provision is utilised to promote and extend learning across the curriculum, including use of our outdoor areas, interactive room and soft-play area.
